Yufuin & Beppu from Fukuoka: transport, booking & stays
Compare trains from Hakata with Fukuoka highway buses, then plan a Yufuin or Beppu day trip, ryokan stay, return bookings and luggage.
Official sources reviewed and edited FIRST QUESTION
Should I visit both Yufuin and Beppu in one day?
Start by comparing a day focused on one destination. Combining both adds intercity travel to the Fukuoka return journey and reduces walking or bathing time. If both matter, consider one night in the onsen area and return to Fukuoka before departure day.

Before choosing
Yufuin no Mori is all-reserved. Check your return to Hakata too.
Choose your date and destination: Yufuin Station, Yufuin Station Bus Center, Beppu Station and Beppu Kitahama are different arrival points. Match them to your hotel and final transfer.
Check both directions before committing to the outward trip. Verify Yufuin no Mori operating dates, train names and bus stops in the booking screen.
Distinguish release times: the JR regular-ticket FAQ lists 10:00 one month before travel; both bus routes list 08:00 on the same day of the previous month, Japan time. Check exceptions such as month ends in the official system.
Check payment and collection deadlines: do not leave a bus reservation unpaid past its ticketing limit. For JR regular online tickets, check collection requirements including the payment card, reservation number and identification number.
Separate passes from regular tickets: JR regular-ticket booking and rail-pass seat booking are different services. If using a pass, check its own procedure first.
Yufuin day trip: station or bus center → town walk → decide your turn-back time toward Kinrinko → meal → booked return. Reduce stops to match your walking pace.
Beppu day trip: arrival point → selected sightseeing venue → meal → choose one bath or another sight → return. Hells sightseeing admission is not a bathing ticket.
One night: explore one area, then check in before the accommodation’s dinner deadline → add one area next day or return directly to Fukuoka. Include luggage transfers between hotels.
Check bags, accommodation and your flight first
Ask your Fukuoka hotel whether it stores large bags between stays and when they must be collected. If not, compare routes with your suitcase included.
Check each property’s dinner deadline, shuttle booking and check-in time, and each day-use bath’s hours, towels, child and tattoo policies.
Allow for traffic and weather on long-distance buses. First compare returning to Fukuoka the day before your flight, working back from the airline’s check-in deadline.
