Where should I start?

For a Tenjin base, compare Nishitetsu trains; from Hakata, compare the Dazaifu Liner Bus with a train transfer. Our starting plan is Dazaifu Station โ†’ shrine and approach walk โ†’ meal and break โ†’ return, adding a museum only if time allows. We suggest leaving large bags at your hotel. Dazaifukanโ€™s temporary luggage storage is suspended during its October 1โ€“December 22, 2026 closure.

Hakata โ†’ Liner BusRegular ยฅ800; onboard transit IC or supported contactless card ยฅ780. Standard reference about 40 minutes.Hakata Bus Terminal 1F stop 11. No reservation, but boarding is not guaranteed when full.
Airport international terminal โ†’ Liner BusRegular ยฅ700; onboard transit IC or supported contactless card ยฅ680. Standard reference about 25 minutes. From domestic arrivals, transfer to international first. Add traffic delays, luggage handling and your flight deadline.

First family visit: shrine and breaks first

Start with the approach, shrine grounds and a meal before returning. Before adding Kamado Shrine or Yanagawa, consider how much walking your child can manage. This is our planning suggestion.

Several bags? Leave them at your hotel

Do not assume a station locker will be available. Confirm hotel storage hours and collection after your return.

Adding a museum on a rainy day

Check the museumโ€™s separate admission and opening calendar, including the walk to its connecting passage. An indoor destination does not make the entire journey indoors.

From Hakata or Tenjin: plan the return too

The table uses Dazaifu Liner โ€œTabitoโ€ fares, not the airportโ€“Hakata bus. Tabito cannot be used solely between the airport and Hakata. Check weekday/weekend timetables and the return boarding point. Include the Nishitetsu-Futsukaichi transfer when searching for trains.

Admission and current works: do not rely on old photos

Ordinary shrine-ground visits are free; museums and the amusement park have separate admission. The official grounds guide labels the temporary sanctuary as being dismantled, so do not plan around older photos of its planted roof. Follow current notices and on-site directions for worship access.

Baby-care stops and stroller rental

The tourism association lists nursing facilities at the shrine rest house and inside the ticket gates at Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station. Do not rely on closed Dazaifukan. The city tourist information office lists stroller rental from 09:00โ€“16:30 at ยฅ100 per hour; confirm availability and return arrangements there.

Kyushu National Museum connection: ask staff with a stroller

The museumโ€™s photo guide distinguishes the escalators from the accessibility lift and directs stroller and wheelchair users to staff or the intercom for assistance. Ask before carrying a stroller when only stairs or escalators are visible. Choose the museum around its opening calendar and your childโ€™s energy.

A shorter visit or a fuller day

Shorter plan: station โ†’ approach and shrine โ†’ meal and break โ†’ return. Fuller plan: add one museum to that sequence. These are JapanPin suggestions, not guaranteed durations. On a flight day, work backwards through locker searches, possible bus delays and terminal travel; move the visit to another day if the margin is too small.

Questions before you go

Is there a direct train from Tenjin to Dazaifu?

The standard route changes from the Tenjinโ€“Omuta Line to the Dazaifu Line at Nishitetsu-Futsukaichi. Check connections for your travel date.

Do I need to reserve the Hakataโ€“Dazaifu bus?

Tabito does not require reservations, but a full bus may not accept you. Check the return timetable and a train alternative.

How much does Dazaifu Tenmangu cost?

Ordinary visits to the shrine grounds are free. Museums, the amusement park and other facilities charge separately.

Can I leave a suitcase at Dazaifukan?

Temporary storage is suspended during the October 1โ€“December 22, 2026 closure. Station lockers are limited too; compare hotel storage first.

Can I rent a stroller for a visit with children?

The city tourist information office lists rental from 09:00โ€“16:30 at ยฅ100 per hour. Ask about stock, suitability for your child and returns.
