Kawagoe day trip from Tokyo: trains, passes & a half-day walk
For a day of historic streets outside Tokyo, consider Kawagoe. Plan a walk around its old storehouses, bell tower and Candy Alley, then choose a train route that suits where you are staying.

Where should I start?
Compare the Tobu Tojo Line from Ikebukuro with Seibu services from Seibu-Shinjuku or Takadanobaba. Kawagoe, Kawagoeshi and Hon-Kawagoe are separate stations. For a first visit, allow half a day locally for the warehouse streets, Toki no Kane bell tower and Candy Alley, plus travel from Tokyo. This is a JapanPin route suggestion; shop hours and queues vary.
Compare the options for your trip
From Ikebukuro: Tobu Tojo Line
Tobu gives an approximate 30-minute journey from Ikebukuro to Kawagoe Station. Add travel from your hotel to Ikebukuro and from the arrival station to the old town. Look up outward and return trains for your date.
Look for Hon-Kawagoe services from Seibu-Shinjuku or Takadanobaba. Seibu-Shinjuku is separate from JR Shinjuku, so start with the walk from your hotel. A limited-express journey requires an additional limited-express ticket.
Start with the warehouse streets, bell tower, Candy Alley and a meal. Choose the streets you want to explore and somewhere to rest before adding temples or shrines; this also makes it easier to shorten the day with children.
Kawagoe Station serves JR and Tobu, Kawagoeshi serves Tobu, and Hon-Kawagoe serves Seibu. Check the full station name on the map, then choose a walk or bus to the warehouse district. For the return, match your station and railway to the ticket you bought.
Tobu pass: return rail travel and selected local buses
KAWAGOE DISCOUNT PASS Premium is listed at ยฅ1,200 for adults and ยฅ600 for children. It includes a return trip from Ikebukuro, unlimited travel between Kawagoe and Kawagoeshi, and Tobu buses within the designated area. It is not valid on every bus company. Check eligibility, the travel date, activation and the covered bus routes before buying.
Seibu pass: Hon-Kawagoe return travel and bus options
The adult SEIBU KAWAGOE PASS costs ยฅ1,000 for a return trip to Hon-Kawagoe, using Ikebukuro, Seibu-Shinjuku or Takadanobaba as your Tokyo stations. The version with Eagle Bus CO-EDO LOOP BUS costs ยฅ1,500. These products are for non-Japanese nationals; stopovers are not permitted and limited-express tickets cost extra. Follow your paper or digital ticketโs collection and boarding instructions.
Half-day walk: warehouse streets โ bell tower โ Candy Alley
JapanPin suggestion: travel from your station to the old town, explore the storehouse streets, pass Toki no Kane and continue to Candy Alley. Leave room for a meal or tea, then return to the station you need. If arriving late in the afternoon, keep the visit to the bell-tower area and a meal.
Sweet-potato snacks and meals: check individual shops
Look for sweet-potato snacks and traditional confectionery, then check opening days and last orders for one or two shops you want to visit. Being able to walk through a street does not mean every shop is open, and stock or queue times cannot be guaranteed. Follow shop guidance and leave room for others to pass when stopping to eat or take photos.
On a rainy day: add the Festival Museum and shorten the walk
The Kawagoe Festival Museum displays festival floats and films. It opens 09:30โ17:30 from October to March, with last entry at 17:00; from April to September it closes at 18:30, with last entry at 18:00. It closes on the second and fourth Wednesdays, or the following day if a public holiday. Check year-end and exceptional closures too. You still need to travel outdoors, so shorten the route in heavy rain.
With children: choose a small area and a rest stop
Our planning suggestion: decide whether to walk both ways from the station or use a bus for one leg. With a stroller, check station exits, steps and storage arrangements at your chosen stops. Mark toilets and a seated meal stop on your map, and check child fares for each railway, bus and ticket product.
You can plan a local half-day around the warehouse streets, bell tower and Candy Alley. Add travel from Tokyo separately, and allow more of the day for temples or a long meal queue.
Are Kawagoe and Hon-Kawagoe the same station?
No. Kawagoe serves JR and Tobu; Hon-Kawagoe serves Seibu. Kawagoeshi is another station, so match the full name to your ticket.
Does the local Tobu bus day pass include trains from Tokyo?
The local Koedo Kawagoe bus day ticket is separate from KAWAGOE DISCOUNT PASS Premium with return rail travel. Check the included routes and operator, not just the ticket name.
Are all the Candy Alley shops open in the evening?
Shops keep their own opening days and closing times. Check any shop you particularly want to visit; for a late arrival, plan a short street walk rather than relying on shopping.
