Yokohama day trip from Tokyo: trains, bookings & waterfront walks
Choose your arrival station, arrange a museum activity and leave time for Chinatown. Plan around the weather and the time you have.
Official information reviewed START HERE
How should I plan my visit?
Choose whether to start around Minatomirai and the Red Brick Warehouse or around Yamashita Park and Chinatown. If you want a museum activity, arrange that first and fit your walk around it. For a half day, we suggest focusing on one area.
Getting there and comparing passes
From Tokyo: plan beyond Yokohama Station
From Shibuya, look for Toyoko Line services continuing onto the Minatomirai Line. From Shinjuku, compare the JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line; from Tokyo Station, compare the Tokaido and Yokosuka lines towards Yokohama. Check the destination, onward connection and return services for your date.
The museum lists about eight minutes on foot from either Minatomirai or Bashamichi. The Red Brick Warehouse lists about six minutes from Bashamichi or Nihon-odori. Consider Sakuragicho for a walk via Kishamichi, or Motomachi-Chukagai for Yamashita Park and Chinatown. Check the exit and walking route.
The listed price is ¥460 for adults and ¥230 for children. This ticket covers the Minatomirai Line; JR or Tokyu travel from Tokyo costs extra. Compare individual fares after deciding how much you will walk and which trains you will take.
The standard Minato Burari Ticket is ¥700 for adults and ¥350 for children, covering designated municipal buses, Kanachu buses and Blue Line travel. It excludes the Minatomirai Line. Consider the Akai Kutsu sightseeing bus to reduce walking, but check its timetable before relying on an evening service.
Regular museum hours are 10:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:00. It closes on Tuesdays, or the following day if Tuesday is a national holiday; check the calendar for other closures. Admission is ¥500 for adults and free for high-school students and younger. Paid activities cost extra.
Use a same-day numbered ticket if spaces remain, or buy an admission ticket with an activity voucher online. The booked time is activity check-in. Next-month sales open at 10:00 on the first of each month and end at midnight before the visit, or when sold out. You may enter the museum before the activity time. Times are local to Japan.
Reserve ahead. Participants must be elementary-school age or older and work in pairs. Grades 1–3 must pair with someone of junior-high-school age or older. Preschoolers cannot participate, and only participants can enter the workshop, so arrange supervision for younger siblings. Check in on the third floor at least 15 minutes early.
Build the day around your activity time, starting near Minatomirai and continuing to the Red Brick Warehouse. If time allows, add Yamashita Park and a Chinatown meal, then compare returning from Motomachi-Chukagai. Shorten the later walk if the activity or meal takes longer.
For an afternoon arrival, choose either Minatomirai and the Red Brick Warehouse or Yamashita Park and Chinatown. Use the official Chinatown map, then check your restaurant’s booking or walk-in rules. There is no need to add Kamakura on the same day.
Focus on your booked activity and a meal, deciding outdoor walks according to the weather. There are outdoor sections between stations and buildings. At the review date, Landmark Tower’s Sky Garden is closed for renovation, with reopening planned for 2028 or later and no exact date confirmed. Do not rely on it as an indoor alternative.
The suggested order and allocation of time are JapanPin planning ideas.
Choose a day trip or an overnight stay
Start by comparing a day trip if you are keeping your Tokyo hotel. An overnight stay may suit a relaxed evening by the waterfront; include check-in, luggage transfers, the next day’s route and any extra hotel costs. This is a JapanPin planning suggestion.
The Minatomirai Line lists lifts between entrances and platforms at all stations; check which entrance to use. The museum has a first-floor nursing room, changing table and hot water for formula, plus lifts. It cannot store strollers or large bags that do not fit in its lockers, so check hotel storage. These facilities do not establish step-free access along the entire waterfront walk.
Does museum entry include an immediate activity slot?
Admission and activity access are separate. Same-day numbered tickets depend on remaining spaces. If the activity is a priority, check the official admission-and-activity ticket first.
Does one local pass cover the return journey from Tokyo?
The Minatomirai Line One-Day Ticket and standard Minato Burari Ticket described here do not include JR or Tokyu return travel from Tokyo. Combined tickets may have different coverage; check the specific product before buying.
