Is ICOCA an unlimited travel pass?
No. It is an IC card with fares and purchases deducted from stored value. Check IC acceptance for your route and compare sightseeing-pass coverage separately.

ICOCA or a sightseeing pass?
| Type | How it works | Before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| ICOCA | Fares and purchases are deducted from stored value | IC acceptance, route and balance |
| Sightseeing passes | Product-specific validity, transport and attraction coverage | Your actual covered visits and individual costs |
JapanPin suggestion: compare paying eligible city fares with an IC card against buying a sightseeing pass. Owning ICOCA does not itself include attraction admission or paid limited-express supplements.

- Find a JR-West vending machine with the ICOCA mark or an eligible ticket office. Choose your language and Purchase ICOCA.
- Check the purchase amount and deposit. The official ¥2,000 example contains ¥1,500 stored value and a ¥500 deposit.
- At a supported ticket or top-up machine, check the balance and amount, then add cash. JR guidance says these machines do not support credit-card top-ups.
- Collect the card and change. Tap the same card on entry and exit. Ask staff for help if the balance is insufficient or a gate reports an error.
Do I need ICOCA if I already have Suica?
First check your existing card and the IC acceptance of each service. Participating cards work in compatible mutual-use areas, but not on every train, bus or route. Check separate ticket requirements for long-distance journeys and limited expresses.
Check child ages and child-card issuance rules. Mobile ICOCA has different issuance, top-up and refund procedures: check device support and official instructions before choosing it.
Estimate a standard physical ICOCA refund
For a standard physical ICOCA under JR-West rules, up to ¥220 is deducted from the balance and the ¥500 deposit is returned. If the balance does not exceed the fee, only the deposit is returned.
Excludes commuter passes, mobile ICOCA, Apple Pay, special products and points. Confirm eligible stations, machines and the actual refund with the operator. Inputs are neither saved nor sent to analytics.
