Compare the journey from hotel to hotel, not just the ticket price. Plan stations, luggage, children’s seats and the last leg after Shin-Osaka.

Where should I start?
Use the Shinkansen from Tokyo or Shinagawa to Shin-Osaka as a starting point, then compare the full cost and journey for flights and buses. Your last leg depends on whether you stay in Namba, Umeda or elsewhere. This is a planning comparison, not a lowest-price or live journey-time promise.
Compare the options for your trip
Shinkansen: between city stations
Search Tokyo/Shinagawa–Shin-Osaka and compare Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama stops and journey times. Include the trip from your hotel and your preferred seat in the decision. Shin-Osaka and Osaka Station are different stations.
Our comparison method: add both airport transfers, checked baggage, seat selection and airport waiting time to the same-date airfare. Itami and Kansai are different airports, so look up the last leg from the airport shown on your flight. Check baggage and change conditions with your chosen airline.
Overnight bus: plan the morning too
The official route search lets you compare dates, seat layouts and facilities such as toilets. Check the exact meeting and drop-off points. We suggest planning luggage storage and somewhere to rest after an early arrival. Check child-seat and cancellation conditions for the selected service.
Choose Tokyo or Shinagawa based on your hotel, then select a train that fits your plans after Shin-Osaka. Check reserved seating, passenger numbers, the total price and whether your booking uses QR, linked IC or paper tickets. Read the seller’s change and refund conditions before paying.
Large suitcases and strollers have different rules
Baggage with total dimensions over 160 cm and up to 250 cm requires a seat with an oversized baggage area. Reserving that space does not add to the normal reserved-seat price. Strollers are exempt from the size-based reservation rule, but you need a reservation to use the oversized baggage area. Do not confuse deck storage with the reserved area behind seats.
JR’s standard age bands are adult 12+ and child 6–11, with school-status exceptions for elementary schools established under Japanese law. A baby or infant using a separate reserved seat needs a ticket. Child basic/limited-express fares and Green Car charges have different rules, so compare a quote with the actual passengers and seats.
A nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS alone is not sufficient for Nozomi: check the separate NOZOMI MIZUHO ticket requirements. Compare Hikari and Kodama too. We suggest pricing all eligible journeys during the pass period rather than buying a pass simply for one trip between cities.
Shin-Osaka is Midosuji Line station M13, connecting with JR and the Shinkansen. For Umeda or Namba, check services towards Nakamozu and match the destination exit to your hotel address. A JR connection to Osaka Station may also suit your hotel. Check what your ticket covers, and use the official station map for lift access with a stroller or suitcase.
It arrives at Shin-Osaka. Plan the onward journey to your hotel in Umeda, Namba or another area.
Is flying always better when the airfare is lower?
Compare airport transfers, baggage, seat fees and waiting/transfer time with a train on the same date. Your hotel locations and luggage affect the decision.
Does a stroller always require an oversized baggage seat?
Strollers are treated differently from ordinary oversized suitcases. However, using the oversized baggage area requires a seat reservation for that area.
