Airport railway and city travel
Compare Kitaca or an existing mutually accepted card first. Do not plan to use SAPICA alone for the airport railway.
Check official details โCheck cards separately for the airport railway, Sapporo subway and streetcars, and trips further afield. Includes buying, top-ups and returns.
Official information reviewedIf you already have Suica or ICOCA, check acceptance in the JR Kitaca area and on participating Sapporo subway, bus and streetcar services. SAPICA is a local card and cannot be used on JR. This matters when combining the airport railway with city travel.
On a small screen, swipe sideways to read the whole table.

Compare Kitaca or an existing mutually accepted card first. Do not plan to use SAPICA alone for the airport railway.
Check official details โJR Hokkaido instructs passengers to buy a ticket before boarding for stations outside IC coverage, including Biei and Furano.
Check official details โAcceptance of nationwide cards on SAPICA services does not make SAPICA a nationwide card. Its FAQ explicitly excludes JR. Check both ends of airport, Sapporo and Otaru journeys against the Kitaca map; buy a separate ticket when continuing outside the area.
Check official details โNon-registered Kitaca is sold at supported machines; compare registered cards, including child cards, at JR counters in the Kitaca area. Ordinary Kitaca cannot be topped up with a credit card and has a ยฅ20,000 balance limit. SAPICA is available at subway machines and other listed outlets. We suggest adding what you need for arrival, then topping up later.
Check official details โNon-registered Kitaca is for adults; the child version is registered. Bring the childโs passport or age documentation and confirm the procedure at the counter. Registered child SAPICA is also for its named child and deducts child fares. Check the official validity rule for your childโs birthday.
Check official details โKitaca lists a ยฅ220 refund fee; check its JR handling counters. SAPICA rules deduct up to ยฅ200 from ordinary stored value and return the ยฅ500 deposit: ยฅ1,300 back on a ยฅ1,000 balance. Check separate paperwork for registered cards or passes. Do not assume a Sapporo counter can refund Suica.
Check official details โAn IC card does not reserve a seat or guarantee a service will run. Buy required limited-express or reserved-seat tickets separately, and recheck actual railway and bus operation on your flight day. Our suggestion: note each family memberโs card and departure-day balance in My trip.
Check official details โYes, in the JR Kitaca area and on participating subway, bus and streetcar services. Not every route or reader is covered.
No. SAPICA is not accepted on JR. Use a JR ticket or another accepted IC card.
JR Hokkaido lists Biei outside its IC area. Buy a ticket for the journey before boarding.
Non-registered Kitaca is adult-only. Ask a counter about a registered child card.
Its official FAQ says phones are not supported. Mobile Suica and similar products are separate.
Check railway and bus alternatives during disruption.
Plan your return as well.
