Decide between Naha city and central/northern Okinawa first. A rental car changes your hotel and itinerary choices. This guide covers Naha and the main island; Miyako and Ishigaki need separate flight and stay plans.
From the airport to your stay
Compare Yui Rail and buses from Naha Airport to the city. Yui Rail does not extend to northern Okinawa.
For a rental car, allow time for the branch shuttle, collection and return. Confirm driving eligibility, insurance and vehicle conditions with the provider before booking.
For the north, include bus or car journeys and the final hotel connection. Check flight and local transport notices during typhoons or strong winds.
Itinerary: arrival, sightseeing and departure
Car-free day 1: airport → Naha hotel → food and a walk around Kokusai Street. Check the station or stop for the way back.
Car-free day 2: choose Naha sights or compare a main-island tour with clear pickup, drop-off and cancellation terms. Do not treat northern sights as short city transfers.
Car/overnight extension: give central/northern accommodation its own time and plan the return to Naha. Consider keeping departure day free of a packed northern itinerary.
Choose a hotel area
Naha near Yui Rail: for a public-transport base, compare the actual hotel-to-station walk and baggage handling.
Central coast such as Onna: compare resort stays for time to relax, checking car/bus access, parking and dinner options.
Northern areas such as Motobu: compare for a northern sightseeing stay. Do not assume city-style bus frequency or short airport transfers.
Food and booking checks
Choose local dishes such as Okinawa soba and goya champuru near your route. Ask the restaurant about ingredients, stock and allergens.
For resort/northern stays, check walkable restaurants and evening opening first. For meal-inclusive hotel bookings, confirm meal times and cancellation terms.
