Before you buy
- Nozomi and Mizuho require a special additional ticket with the nationwide pass. Shinkansen fares here use Hikari, Kodama, Sakura or Tsubame.
- Limited-express and Shinkansen fares use ordinary reserved seats in the regular season. Local and rapid services use the seat type stated for each journey. Dates, services and discounts can change the actual price.
- A pass does not guarantee an available seat. Northern Kyushu passes allow up to six free seat reservations; extra advance online reservation fees are not included here.
- Passport, immigration-status and purchase-timing requirements vary by pass. Check your eligibility on the official purchase page.

Three trips worth checking before buying a pass
- Tokyo–Kyoto return only: Hikari / Kodama tickets total ¥27,700, below the nationwide 7-day pass.
- The sample Kansai loop: the five JR legs total ¥5,020, below the ¥12,000 Kansai WIDE pass.
- Sapporo–Otaru return only: even reserved seats total ¥3,600, below the ¥22,000 Hokkaido 5-day pass. Adding a Hakodate return trip changes the result.

How much is a 7-day JAPAN RAIL PASS?
As checked on 22 October 2026, an adult ordinary-class pass costs ¥50,000 online from the official site or ¥53,000 through designated overseas agencies. Agency prices changed on 1 October 2026. Check the official eligibility and purchase conditions.
Is the pass worth it for a Tokyo–Kyoto return trip?
The calculator uses ¥27,700 for a return trip in ordinary reserved seats on Hikari or Kodama in the regular season. That is ¥22,300 less than the official online 7-day pass. Add any other long-distance journeys before deciding.
Which pass should I choose for an Osaka trip?
First separate your JR, subway and private-railway journeys. The sample Kansai loop here costs ¥5,020 in separate JR tickets, below the ¥12,000 Kansai WIDE pass. Visiting nearby cities does not automatically make a pass worthwhile.
How do regional and nationwide passes differ?
They differ in eligible operators, routes, trains and validity. This tool compares a regional pass only when it covers every reviewed service you entered. It does not assume that subways, buses or private railways are covered. Nozomi and Mizuho require a special additional ticket with the nationwide pass.
How are child fares calculated?
The age 6–11 option uses listed child fares. Halving and rounding down the base fare and supplements separately can produce a different result from halving the total. The agency-sold nationwide 7-day child pass costs ¥27,000. Enter a separate child amount for custom fares. Check the operator’s rules for under-six children, reserved seats and accompanying passengers.
