Focus on exhibitions
JapanPin suggestion: choose the exhibitions that interest you, then check which permanent or special-exhibition ticket you need.
Choose what to see at the National Museum of Nature and Science, then decide separately whether to use the children's room, ComPaSS. Plan your Ueno visit around tickets, transport, family facilities and current gallery closures.
Official information reviewedJapanPin suggestion: choose your exhibitions and decide whether to include ComPaSS before checking admission arrangements. With half a day, follow the museum with a break or meal, and use the closure notice below to narrow your exhibition choices.

JapanPin suggestion: check the ComPaSS age, accompaniment and booking rules below, then fit a shorter museum visit around an available session.
JapanPin suggestion: focus on the museum and one meal, leaving out the park walk or extra shopping if the weather or your energy makes that easier.
Official directions list about five minutes on foot from JR Ueno's Park Exit, or ten from Ueno on the Ginza/Hibiya lines and Keisei-Ueno. Set the National Museum of Nature and Science as your destination; with a stroller, separately check your station's lift route.
Permanent exhibitions offer counter sales and advance e-tickets. Special exhibitions set their own prices, hours and admission exemptions; check the individual show instead of applying permanent-exhibition conditions.
ComPaSS is for children from infancy through the sixth year of primary school with a guardian aged 18 or older, with up to three children per guardian. Ages 0–1 need a free reservation too. Book a timed ART PASS ticket for everyone entering; next month's bookings open at noon JST on the first. A ComPaSS ticket does not include museum admission, so check museum fee exemptions separately.
Official guidance lists nursing rooms in Japan Gallery B1 and Global Gallery 3F, plus changing tables on several floors. Stroller loans cannot be reserved and depend on availability. Check the facilities you need and ask separately about stroller use inside ComPaSS.
Usual hours are 09:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30. Monday closures have holiday exceptions and may change during special exhibitions. Check the December 28–January 1 closure and the calendar for your date.
As checked on October 20, 2026, Global Gallery B3 has been closed for renewal since September 8. Parts of the science and technology history exhibition on Global Gallery 2F are also closed. Do not assume a reopening date; check later official notices if those displays are your reason for visiting.
JapanPin suggestion: visit your chosen exhibitions or booked ComPaSS session, take a break and meal, then add the park or Ameyoko only if time allows. For half a day, skip the final stop. If adding Asakusa, allow separate travel and meal time.
Permanent-exhibition tickets and ComPaSS bookings are separate. Same-day online ComPaSS bookings depend on remaining spaces. Do not plan on a place being available or on joining a walk-in queue.
The museum prohibits large suitcases. Do not assume it can store your bags; check storage at your accommodation or station before visiting.
JapanPin suggestion: keep your main museum visit and one meal, and leave out the outdoor walk. Set your return station and break time before adding another museum.
