PLAN YOUR VISIT

How does this fit your day?

Choose which Ueno museum you want before planning the day. Tokyo National Museum suits Japanese art, history and archaeology interests. Pick a few galleries, then arrange Ameyoko shopping or a meal around them.

Getting there, hours and tickets

東京国立博物館 · 東京都台東区上野公園13-9

Getting there

Visitors enter through the Main Gate. Official guidance gives about ten minutes on foot from JR Ueno or Uguisudani. Metro and Keisei Ueno are different stations; the family guide notes stairs and steps on some routes.

Hours and closures

Standard hours are 9:30–17:00, until 20:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays followed by a Monday holiday. Last entry is 30 minutes earlier. Check Monday/holiday exceptions, room closures and year-end arrangements.

Admission and choosing tickets

Collection Exhibitions cost ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for university students; check proof for exemptions such as under-18 admission. Special exhibitions have separate tickets. A special-exhibition ticket includes same-day collection access, not the reverse.

Children, access and luggage

Strollers are allowed but may be restricted in crowded rooms. Nursing rooms are listed at the Main Gate Plaza and Honkan B1. Heiseikan’s ground-floor family space is for ages 0–6 with a guardian; check facility availability.

Official visitor guidance prohibits suitcases and requires security screening at the Main Gate. Arrange luggage at your hotel or station first. Online tickets do not remove screening or guarantee immediate entry.

Before and after your visit

Try selected galleries, a park break, then a meal or shopping towards Ameyoko and Okachimachi. Leave separate travel time for Asakusa and set a museum departure time if you have a restaurant reservation.

This order is a JapanPin planning suggestion. Check travel times, opening and reservations for your date.

Common questions

Does a Ueno Park visit include the museum?

A park walk and museum admission are separate. Plan around the Main Gate, your chosen exhibitions and the right ticket.

Are special exhibitions free for children too?

Do not apply collection-exhibition exemptions automatically to special exhibitions. Check each show’s age, ticket and booking rules.
