Japan autumn foliage 2026: choosing your dates and destination
Autumn colour varies with location, elevation and the year’s temperatures. If your dates are fixed, choose places that fit those dates. If foliage is the main reason for your trip, compare city forecasts with reports for the places you want to visit.

Start with your dates or your main reason for travelling
JNTO describes a broad season from late September to early December, depending on location, elevation and temperatures. That does not mean every attraction has autumn colour throughout that period.

| Your trip | Check first | Keep some flexibility |
|---|---|---|
| Flights and hotel already booked | Reports dated close to your visit | One indoor alternative if the leaves are not ready |
| Choosing dates mainly for foliage | City forecasts and the attraction’s usual season | Avoid building the whole trip around one predicted day |
| Travelling with children | Viewing area, meals, toilets and the journey back | Start with one temple or park and time for a break |
Compare the actual places, from Sapporo to Fukuoka
Keep Sapporo’s city parks separate from Jozankei, and central Osaka separate from Minoh. In Tokyo, distinguish a ginkgo avenue from a garden with maple trees. Compare reports for the actual stop, rather than applying one city label to every outing.
For Kyoto and Fukuoka, choose your first stop and then check a dated report for it. The dashboard links to all five cities. Where no suitable report has been verified, conditions remain unconfirmed.
Forecasts, report dates and review dates mean different things
A forecast looks ahead. A report date records when the source assessed the leaves. A review date records when JapanPin read that material. A past-season calendar or an old photograph does not establish this year’s conditions.
A city forecast does not tell you when every temple will look its best. If you have seen a December date for Kyoto, read the explanation below before arranging your temple visits.
A practical check before booking and before visiting
These are JapanPin’s planning suggestions. Checking at these stages does not guarantee that a report will be available or that the leaves will be at their best.
Before booking: choose one main foliage stop and an alternative in the same area.
Before departure: recheck this year’s opening arrangements, reservation requirements and report dates.
The day before: check the weather, last admission and the station and service you will use to return.
On the day: follow local operating notices and reduce the number of stops if queues disrupt your plan.
With children, plan breaks before adding more stops
Plan dinner and the journey back before adding an evening visit. Ask the venue about stroller routes, steps, feeding spaces and changing facilities. Do not assume a facility is available without checking.
Pack an extra layer and a change of clothes for wet weather. Use My Trip to keep the details you still need to check, alongside the family checklist and notes for each stop.
Frequently asked questions
When is autumn foliage season in Japan?
It varies by region and elevation. Use the broad season to narrow your options, then check forecasts and dated reports for the actual places you will visit.
Where should I go for foliage in November?
Early, mid and late November are different planning windows. Choose stops you can reach on your dates, then check their report dates. A destination list cannot guarantee colour on a particular day.
Does a passed forecast date mean the leaves are at peak?
No. A date passing is not an observation. Check a current report for the specific location.
Can I choose this year’s dates from last year’s photographs?
They can help you understand the setting, but they do not show this year’s conditions. Check the year and date and keep them separate from current forecasts and reports.
What should I prepare first for a foliage trip with children?
Choose one area and plan meals, toilets, breaks and the journey back. Confirm stroller and baby-care arrangements with the venue and record what remains to be checked.
