Kyoto autumn foliage 2026: should you plan around December 11?
December 11 is not a peak date for every attraction in Kyoto. The JMC city forecast and viewing information for individual temples measure different things. Check the places you want to visit and reports dated close to your trip.

What does December 11 describe?
In JMC’s second forecast, published on October 1, 2026, Kyoto’s maple date is December 11. Its city forecast follows the reference-tree observation criterion: the first day most leaves have changed colour. It is not a measurement of the best day across Kyoto’s temples.
Check the temple you actually want to visit
Kyoto City’s guide lists mid to late November as the typical viewing period for Kiyomizu-dera, Tofuku-ji and Arashiyama. A typical period is neither a confirmed peak date nor an observation for this year.

How to approach a November or December booking
For a November trip, compare your main stop with its typical season, then reassess using this year’s reports closer to departure. Rather than rearranging an entire Osaka–Kyoto trip around one prediction, leave room to change the order of stops within an area.
December is not automatically too late. Equally, the date December 11 cannot guarantee colour at your chosen temple. If accommodation is already booked, use attraction reports to choose your outings and keep some plans that do not depend on foliage.
Do not mistake the previous calendar for current conditions
When checked on October 26, 2026, Kyoto City’s page displayed the previous season’s records and said its 2026 survey was scheduled to start on October 30. Those older colour labels are not observations for this year.
Whenever you return to a source, check the year, report date and attraction name together. This article’s review date is not a live update of conditions.
For a day trip from Osaka, start with one area
Choose one main area rather than fitting both Gion–Higashiyama and Arashiyama into the same day. With children, plan one temple, a meal, an indoor break and the journey back before deciding on an evening visit. This is JapanPin’s itinerary advice, not confirmation of stroller or baby-care facilities.
Frequently asked questions
Is December 11 Kyoto’s peak foliage day?
It is not a peak day for every attraction. Keep the city forecast separate from conditions at individual temples and check a dated report for your stop.
Can I visit Kyoto for foliage in November?
Typical temple viewing periods can help with planning, but cannot guarantee this year’s colour. Choose your main stop and check current reports before departure.
Is December always too late for Kyoto foliage?
Not necessarily. It depends on the location and the season. Check reports for the attraction you want to visit and keep some activities that do not depend on foliage.
Can I use last year’s condition table as this year’s report?
No. Check the year and report date. Typical seasons and previous records do not establish current conditions.
What should I plan first for Kyoto foliage with children?
Start with one temple in one area, meals, toilets, a break and the journey back. Decide on evening viewing or another area only after allowing for time and your child’s needs.
